Reynalton

Reynalton presents an ideal place to stay in Pembrokeshire as it sits almost centrally between the coastline and ‘the secret waterway’ of the Cleddau Estuary so you have the best of both worlds to explore. Reynalton is a small peaceful village 15 minutes from the resorts of Tenby and Saundersfoot. This secret waterway of Pembrokeshire is lined with ancient forests, historic buildings and is rich in wildlife, flora and fauna making it an extremely popular choice for those seeking a holiday in South West Wales. Carew Castle and its tidal mill are a popular choice for visitors. Here you can enjoy a circular scenic 20 minute walk around the mill pond, and perhaps even enjoy a picnic on one of the benches dotted along the route. The castle itself is also worth a visit. With a history spanning 2000 years it has many interesting facts and stories just waiting to be heard. Carew Castle regularly holds ecology walks, craft fairs and live history weekends where the past of the castle is brought to life with actors and props. Carew Castle is also a site of scientific special interest due to its bat colony which have taken residence in one of the towers. Over the years more than half of the different bat species found in Britain have been recorded to have visited here.

Moving further up the waterway the idyllic village of Lawrenny sits alongside the historic quayside. Once the centre of a thriving boat building trade, the quay became an important docking point for quarry and coal barges and during the second world war it was home to a squadron of Walrus seaplanes. Despite its industrial past it is now a peaceful and scenic area where many visitors come to enjoy a picnic along the banks of the waters edge, go bike riding, horseriding and also birdwatching as the rich mud of the river banks is the perfect environment to find waders, herons and kingfishers. Stop off for a bite to eat at the award winning Ouayside Lawrenny tearooms which is renowned for making the best of local Pembrokeshire produce in freshly made dishes and cakes.
