Located just 4 miles outside historic Pembroke town, right in the heart of the beautiful Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, is Freshwater East - a truly unspoilt rural seaside location. The long golden sandy beach sheltered by sand dunes, is perfect for idyllic family days at the seaside and the children will love exploring the rock pools and splashing about in the clear blue sea. The calm waters of the bay are perfect for swimming, kayaking and bodyboarding, with the level pristine sands being perfect for beach games, sunbathing and relaxing in this wonderfully peaceful setting. In winter, Freshwater East is a popular spot with surfers too, when the winter swells provide some awesome surf waves, but only recommended for the experienced surfer.
If you enjoy walking then this is the perfect spot; the coastal path offers fabulous walks in all directions, with spectacular coastal scenery and hidden coves to discover along the way; head East to the pretty and remote Swanlake Bay, then on to Manorbier with its fabulous castle on the hill and a quaint village pub; or head West to discover beautiful Stackpole Quay with its historic walled gardens with a cosy café, and the award winning Stackpole Inn offering superb food; from there head on a little further to discover one of the world’s top rated beaches – the breathtakingly beautiful and secluded little white sand beach at Barafundle Bay.
Freshwater East is a superb choice for family seaside holidays and with the beach being dog friendly all year round this makes it perfect for pet friendly holidays too, meaning dogs and their owners can enjoy superb long, or short, walks on the beach with plenty of room to run and play.
The Secret Marsh Nature Reserve, found to the rear of the car park, is the perfect place to observe wildlife and discover the fascinating plants, animals, birds and insects that make their home here. A purpose built bird hide offers the best place to observe local and migrating birds, and the boardwalk over the pond is a perfect viewing platform to observe amphibian wildlife. The sand dunes backing the beach are also a great place to observe the fascinating sight of glow-worms on a summer’s evening. All in all, the natural unspoilt habitat at Freshwater East is a perfect haven for all types of wildlife.
If fossils are your thing, then Freshwater East beach is one of Pembrokeshire’s fossil hot spots; the rocks and cliffs along the beach offer a fascinating insight to the area’s prehistoric past. Common fossil finds include many Silurian fossils, Carboniferous brachiopods and corals.
Facilities at Freshwater East are limited but do include a large level car park, public toilets, the village pub and a restaurant. The Freshwater Bay Holiday Village has a club house serving food and drink, plus a shop and hire facilities for water sports equipment.
