Lower town Fishguard is a picture postcard quay with traditional seafarers cottages framing the old harbour where the River Gwaun meets the end of its journey into the sea. It was the centrepoint of the failed French invasion in 1797, when allegedly, the local population fended off some thousand or so troops. They were led by the legendary Jemima Nicholas. Experience how the events happened with the anniversary tapestry on display in the town. Spend an afternoon of your holiday in Pembrokeshire strolling around the cottages and out to the waters edge. Parking and toilets are available on the quay just by the bridge. There is no access to the beach but it's very pretty and the water is often popular for a spot of crabbing when the tide is in, but if you don’t fancy catching your own then keep a look out for a blackboard by the bridge advertising fresh crab and lobster.

The old town is framed by cliffs with Fishguard on one side and the old Napoleonic fort on the other. If you head north on the road out of lower town you can visit the viewing point at the top, grab and ice cream from the van and wander towards the fort. Built between 1770 and 1781 it is an imposing reminder of the armed defence in the area. It offers a fantastic view of Fishguard bay as well as an opportunity to appreciate the contrast between the new town and the historical lower town. Keep an eye out in the bay for porpoises or dolphins which are often seen following the ferry into harbour.

Stop off at the Ship Inn at the bottom of the hill for a tale or two about the area and its seafaring history and soak up the local hospitality with a glass of ale. Whilst on your cottage holiday in Pembrokeshire be inspired by this breathtaking landscape and head into the West Wales Arts Centre. Situated in the heart of Fishguard main town this established gallery has a broad choice of contemporary Welsh Art for sale. Enjoy yourselves before relaxing with a warm coffee in their coffee shop.

After exploring lower town then pop into the Gourmet Pig in Fishguard for a choice of fine wines, meat and cheeses to take home and enjoy in the garden of your comfortable self-catering home.
